How Australia Post sorts it

  1. 01Recipient
  2. 02Street
  3. 03Suburb · State
  4. 04Postcode

STATE = ABBR · 4 DIGITS

Every profile this generator assembles reads the way Australia Post sorts it: recipient first, then the street number and name, the suburb with its state code, and a four-digit postcode anchoring the last line. The state line is always an abbreviation — NSW, VIC, QLD, WA — never spelled out, which is the first thing a form builder gets wrong. Each card pairs the address with an Australian name, a 04xx mobile and an email. Generate a set, filter by state, export what you need.

All 8 states and territories, deep pools for the big ones

The filter covers all 8 states and territories. NSW, Victoria, Queensland and WA carry deep city pools for heavy testing; every other region holds its capital with a zone-correct postal code in the dropdown.

New South Wales

Sydney and Newcastle pools: CBD, Surry Hills, Newtown, Hamilton. Postcodes 2000-2599 and two more bands; 1xxx is reserved for LVRs and PO Boxes.

Victoria

Melbourne and Geelong: CBD, Fitzroy, Richmond. Postcodes in the 3xxx band: 3000, 3220 and neighbours.

Queensland

Brisbane and Gold Coast: Fortitude Valley, Paddington, Surfers Paradise. Postcodes in the 4xxx band: 4000, 4217.

Western Australia

Perth: CBD, Northbridge, Fremantle. Postcodes in the 6xxx band, starting at 6000.

Every card shows its suburb and postcode, so a Surry Hills address never gets mistaken for a Fitzroy one.

How an Australian address is laid out

Australian addresses follow the British shape — specific to general — with two local signatures: the suburb line and the abbreviated state:

Ms Charlotte Nguyen← recipient
342 Crown Street← street number + name
Surry Hills NSW 2010← suburb + state code + postcode
AUSTRALIA← country, in caps, for international mail

Three things trip people up. The state is written as two or three capital letters — NSW, VIC, QLD, WA — never "New South Wales" spelled out; local forms reject the full name. The suburb does the work a city does elsewhere: Surry Hills is a suburb of Sydney, and it is the suburb that pairs with the postcode. And the postcode is four digits — not five like the US ZIP, not alphanumeric like Canada or the UK.

The postcode history below follows the documented Australian postal record — four digits since 1967, built for mechanical sorting.

One address at a time does not seed a test database. Save the profiles you like, then export the whole set as CSV or JSON in one click. Every field comes along — name, street, suburb, state, postcode, phone and email — so nothing needs re-formatting downstream. No cap, no signup, no watermark.

Postcodes, decoded: four digits and four orange boxes

An Australian postcode is four digits placed at the end of the address, before the country line. The first digit maps the state: 2 for New South Wales (with 1 reserved for large-volume receivers and PO Boxes), 3 for Victoria, 4 for Queensland, 6 for Western Australia. The full national range runs from 0200 to 9944 — the low end once belonged to the Australian National University, the high end to Cannonvale in Queensland.

The system was born mechanical. Postcodes arrived in 1967, introduced by the Postmaster-General's Department to replace Melbourne's letter-and-number codes (N3, E5) and a similar scheme in rural New South Wales — and their arrival coincided with a large-scale mechanical sorting system, starting with Sydney's Redfern Mail Exchange. That machinery is why Australian envelopes still print four orange boxes in the lower-right corner: a slot for each digit, so the automated sorters could read a handwritten postcode. Two quirks survive from history: some towns carry two postcodes, and the 8000 series marks special addresses in Victoria — leftovers of a radio call-sign system the digits once abbreviated.

Use cases for test addresses

  • Form and QA testing — fill Australian checkout flows with state-valid, 4-digit-postcode profiles that pass field validation.

  • Localization reference — compare suburb-led addressing and abbreviated states against full-name forms before wiring address fields.

  • Teaching and demos — show how the first postcode digit maps the state, and why 1xxx never appears on a street address.

What these samples are — and aren't

Built for: software testing, format reference, localization QA, placeholder data.

Not for: real correspondence, identity verification, or registering for services against their terms. Generated profiles are synthetic; a correct 4-digit postcode is not proof the address exists. For actual mail, confirm the address with the recipient or Australia Post's own tools.

How the samples are built: states, postcode bands and line order follow the documented Australian postal system. Data pools last reviewed September 2026.
